5 Tips on Sorting Out Your Home Storage Headaches

With spring almost in sight, there’s no time like the present to take action against clutter. It needn’t be a major operation – sorting out just one drawer can restore a sense of order – but once you start you’ll want to continue. So how do you get sorted and where to start? Organisation is key. Keep things together that are meant to be together and use baskets or bins for neat storage.

1. Entrance and hall

Problem: Shoes, coats, bags and umbrellas can make the entrance to your home untidy and cluttered.

Solution: Install a wall unit to free up floor space, put up coat hooks, and add a shoe rack and boxes. Umbrella stands also add a fabulous decorative touch, as well as being practical.

2. Bathroom

Problem: General clutter in one of the most frequently used rooms in the house.

Solution: Store your products attractively and hide unsightly bath toys, spare toilet rolls and cleaning fluids in a four-drawer rush unit. Keep spare towels high up on a shelf so they don’t get mixed up with towels that are in use. Fold clean towels in half, and roll-up, then stack with the spirals on display for hotel chic at home.

3. Kitchen

Problem: Family kitchens become the dumping ground for post, the contents of school bags and shopping bags, so keeping work surfaces clear is a challenge.

Solution: Try to sort items as they come in and action, bin or file. Hang a rail with butcher’s hooks on a wall to keep utensils off surfaces. Kitchens often don’t have space for all the council recycling containers, so try using plastic in-cupboard bins for recyclables, which you empty when full.

4. Children’s bedrooms

Problem: Children’s toys take over valuable floor space, and the room can become chaotic if toys aren’t stored properly.

Solution: If your children have lots of soft toys that aren’t used regularly, consider putting them high up to gain more floor space – a toy net such as a pop-up one, or shelves are good solutions. You may also want to consider a seat storage box, which is perfect for big toys, and doubles as a bedside table or stool.

5. Utility area

Problem: Too many dirty clothes.

Solution: Laundry baskets are essential but they take up space when not in use. Try collapsible laundry bags, which are perfect as spares for busy washing days and they can be slipped down the side of the machine when not in use. Keep a small laundry basket downstairs as well as upstairs. It can help organise your washing.
